Underground Downspout Drains Services
Whether you are experiencing standing water in a specific location on your property or dealing with flooding issues in/or around your home, we’re here to help. Making sure you have the proper yard drainage is crucial to protecting your investment. Underground downspout drains can be installed to divert a substantial amount of water away from the foundation of your home. Underground downspout drains also eliminate mulch and decorative stone wash out as water is released in a designated turf area and not into a landscape bed. They also provide a cleaner aesthetic appeal compared to above ground extension drain pipes that are a hassle to deal with and end up coming off your downspouts from time to time. Every homeowners’ nightmare is that improper yard drainage will ultimately lead to water ending up in the basement. Unfortunately, we’ve seen it happen.
Do I need to understand Downspouts?
- Soil eroding along foundation
- Prevent hydrostatic pressure buildup along foundation walls that can cause cracks to walls and floors
- Divert water away from hardscape and softscape areas
- Soft & squishy soils around foundation after 24 hours of no precipitation
- Water draining towards or near homes foundation
- Foundation leaks
If you have experienced any of these problems and would like to figure out a solution Bright Green Landscapes is here to help. Fortunately there are several ways to address yard drainage issues.
Why Underground Downspouts Drains?
Clogged gutters and downspouts are the number one leading cause of basement flooding. We are amazed by how many homes we see with downspouts draining right along the foundation. Installing underground downspout drains is a great insurance policy against basement flooding. We recommend installing drains at least 10 feet away from home with the proper pitch to prevent hydrostatic pressure build up along foundation walls. We can either install corrugated drain tile or PVC drain pipe. Installation of underground downspouts also prevents flooding of plant root systems and washing away mulch or decorative stone in your landscape beds. We can even install underground downspout drains for those tough areas along sidewalks of paver patio areas.
Underground Downspouts Drains Consultation
Bright Green Landscapes will work with you to develop a plan that suits your property. During initial consultation we will walk around your property with you to go over different options for your drainage needs. We will take measurements for all your downspouts and decide on where the best discharge area would be for your property.
Underground Downspouts Drains Installation Process
Majority of trenches are dug by hand, this enables us to save your existing sod and reinstall it after the work is complete. Trenches are dug out between 8-12” deep and 6” wide to accommodate our 4” drain pipe. We can either install corrugated drain tile or PVC drain pipe. Don’t worry about those difficult downspout locations along sidewalks or patios, we can take care of those too. Pop-Up emitters or grate caps will be installed to prevent any debris or critters from entering the drainage system. We will backfill all trenches and take away any excess soils as needed. Grade areas by hand, reinstall existing sod and we’re done.
Materials Used
Corrugated Drain Tile VS. PVC Drain Pipe
Corrugated drain tile is a cheaper alternative compared to PVC. They both get the job done but the PVC piping is more durable and will last longer. If you have a chipmunk or ground squirrel problem, it may be wise to go with PVC. These pesky animals are known to be able to chew through the corrugated piping from time to time. PVC piping is also recommended if drains are installed underneath patios, driveways, sidewalks or sump pumps.
Other Drainage Services We Offer
French Drain Installation
Installation of french drains are primarily used to prevent ground and surface water from damaging building foundations. It can also be used to get rid of standing water in low areas of lawn or in ditches. French drains can also be installed for downspouts, sump pumps and retaining walls. Our french drain installations are installed with either 4” perforated corrugated drain tile or 4” perforated PVC. The corrugated drain tile is a cheaper alternative but is not as durable as PVC piping. All drains are sloped away from the home to ensure water stays away from your foundation.
Underground Sump Pump Drain Installation
Installing underground sump pump drains is a great way to divert the water to a specific location on your property to minimize flooding around your home. We recommend this service for anyone experiencing frequent sump pump usage or for someone that wants a cleaner look and not have to worry about an extension hose on the discharge pipe.
Land Grading
Land grading is a great way to divert water away from your home. Creating the proper slope to divert surface water away from your home is crucial to protect your investment. People are often surprised to learn that even a small grading change can make a world of difference.
